Confined Space Rescue Operations

Emergency rescue teams are required any time authorized entrants are working in a permit required confined space. Time can be of the essence when an incident occurs in a confined space. Having a rescue team on-site while performing work in a confined space greatly reduces the amount of time required to reach, treat, package and evacuate a victim from a confined space. Our 40-hour trained Confined Space Rescue Teams are trained in non-entry and entry rescue techniques. All CSR team members are trained in CPR/First Aid and in techniques and equipment used in confined spaces.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are permits required for this service?

Here are the details for Permit-Required Confined Space Rescue:

CFR 1910.146 defines and regulates Permit-Required Confined Spaces.

A permit-required confined space means that: “Permit-required confined space (permit space)” means a confined space that has one or more of the following characteristics:

(1) Contains or has a potential to contain a hazardous atmosphere;

(2) Contains a material that has the potential for engulfing an entrant;

(3) Has an internal configuration such that an entrant could be trapped or asphyxiated by inwardly converging walls or by a floor which slopes downward and tapers to a smaller cross-section; or

(4) Contains any other recognized serious safety or health hazard

CTS Confined Space Rescue personnel are trained to meet the requirements of OSHA 1910.146 and provide approved rescue services for most permit-required confined spaces. Our CSR team members have a minimum of 40 hours of initial Confined Space Rescue Training as well as additional training throughout the year.

Why is confined space rescue necessary?

Due to the unique and hazardous environment of confined spaces, specialized training, equipment, and procedures are required to ensure the safety and survival of individuals who may become entrapped, incapacitated, or in distress within these spaces.

How often should a confined space rescue team practice or conduct drills?

To maintain proficiency, regular training and drills are essential. It's generally recommended that teams conduct practice rescues under various conditions at least annually, though more frequent training may be required based on the complexity and frequency of confined space work in their jurisdiction.

How can businesses prepare for potential confined space emergencies?

Businesses can conduct regular hazard assessments, ensure employees are trained in confined space entry procedures, establish communication protocols, and have a rescue plan in place. It's also crucial to coordinate with local confined space rescue services for immediate response.

Can confined space hazards change over time?

Absolutely. The conditions in a confined space can change rapidly. For instance, the atmosphere can become toxic or oxygen-deficient due to the presence of chemicals or the activities being performed. Continuous monitoring and vigilance are essential.
